Updating firmware on the Nokia E71 can be done from Windows only. This is silly, Nokia already provides everything else for the Mac OSX; The Photos are managed by iPhoto, the music via iTunes, contacts via Address Book, Calendaring via iCal. All of these happen via the Nokia PC Suite and iSync.
So why cant Nokia provide a tool to update the firmware via Mac OSX???
Nokia Device Software Update
Earlier yesterday evening, my Airtel provided SMS only pager phone died with a “Unregistered SIM” failure. Today being a holiday, my IT dept is not functioning to replace the device either. Soo… enter Nokia mobile mail Beta.
Nokia Push Mail Beta
I first created a procmail recipe to push all my pageable events to my public facing hosting server at symonds.net. One copy to my new pager address and one copy to my Maildir.

Next, I registered this new POP/IMAP enabled email@example.com at Nokia Email. This sends an SMS link to my registered mobile number to download the push mail client – installed and configure. Chose Hutch as my connectivity provider instead of any WiFI network. This way, I will continue to receive push mails even when I am not at home.
I have been using this since morning. So far, the alerts have not skipped a beat. The mail client is very sluggish and lacks a delete all facility. Very useful when you get spammed with a ton of alerts.
Overall, it sure beats carrying 2 devices. It also beats a Blackberry which I believe requires you to use MS Exchange for the same functionality (ugh). This service is currently in Beta and Nokia is not charging for it but am sure they have all the plans of monetizing it at the earliest. Till then, I enjoy the free push mail facility.
