Clueless at the prompt

Linux! I don't know how it works anymore.

Lately, I have been putting a few hundred RHEL boxes into production and am finding it very difficult to do very simple things.

How do I make sense of the top output? How do I find out how many packets are being dropped because there is no listening socket? Which partition is mapped to which volume? How do I use “ip addr” commands? How do I detect disk/mem failures?

I bet I will have to relearn most things in another years time. Why cant things just stay the same???

Xorg 7.3 and multiple monitors

Xorg 7.3's hot-plugging support is finally here and it *works*. I can still remember the battling I used to do with Xinerama (with frequent lockups) back in the days of XFree86 3.x/4.x.

Now with the laptop's VGA port connected to my LCD panel, its just one command away. I wish I had more Video RAM though to support higher resolutions though. 😀

xrandr –output VGA-0 –right-of LVDS –mode 1024×768

I am not sure if its an enlightenment e17 window manager, but the window handling is amazing too. I can start a movie on the LCD screen and continue to switch desktops without affecting my work area.

Nice!

New Yahoo Search Interface

I tried http://search.yahoo.com/ page after the announcement at http://yodel.yahoo.com/2007/10/01/the-new-yahoo-search/.

First impression – the page is remarkably clean (and empty) for Yahoo standards. I like it. 🙂
