In the news – e17 the WM

E17 Available From CVS

Its finally on slashdot. Most of the world has forgotten e, but this is going to be the best desktop environment ever. Will it beat Mac OSX???? Hmmm…. just have to wait and find out.

I have been trying to compile e17 from CVS on FreeBSD for ages, working out the autofoo magic is still soo hard. I kinda gave up trying to compile them. There was this post by someone on enlightenment-devel with a brief HOWTO. Its time i referred to it again!

How many breakdowns in a day?

There is no mukthi from my run of bad luck return journeys.

It all began when the MGM tractor decided to break down inside the MGM Resorts, Chennai blocking the gates. We were all holed up in there for a good 30 mins till another tractor came to push the heap of metal away.

Then the awfully fantastic clone of a Volvo by KPN travels sprung a fuel leak somewhere near the outskirts of Chennai which eventually ended up grounding the bus in Small Kanchipuram. There was a clever attempt by the driver to plug the leak using a condom but alas, we knew we had a long wait till the rescue came down from Chennai.

After 5 hours of waiting, we were finally aboard the rescue bus and chugging along the highway till disaster struck again – the fan belt decided to go to the zoo. Apparently, spanner #13 was missing from the tool kit to even attempt to replace the fan. Here we go again, stuck in the middle of nowhere, calling another rescue party. A good hour later we had a replacement fan belt and spanner and along we went… whee!

Oh damn, this bus does not have a permit to Karntaka. Get down at hosur at 5AM in the morning, hop into anoter KPN bus and finally reached office at 7AM.

When we got into the office cab to take us home…

Q. Anna condom iddheya?
Q. Anna spanner #13 iddheya?
Q. Anna fan belt iddheya?
Q. Anna permit iddheya?
A. Yella iddhe saar!

Hopefully, somebody jobless will do a good job with a full transcript of the trip. Song and dance number included too.

Sing along, apdi pode pode pode, ipdi vaade vaade vaade…. this song sure kept us going! :)

Linux Vs BSD

I have been shortlisted to give a talk on BSD at the upcoming Linux Bangalore 2004 which happens 2 weeks from now. The only BSD talk during the 3 day seminar! BSD sure is slow in India.

Anyway, am giving an intro into the various BSD flavors and an insight into choosing one for your specific needs. As part of the googling that I have been doing, came across this amazing
BSD vs Linux article by Matthew D. Fuller.

A perfect advocacy article which I can use to prepare for my slides!

Redid my ~/Mail/ layout

Had a little time on my hands today to move all my Maildir folder to from Mail/folder to Mail/.folder.

Why do this?

To use an IMAP client like Thunderbird/Mozilla to access my maildirs over IMAP. I was hesitant to try the various MUAs as the chances of screw ups with the new fangled clients are higher. Why risk it? With IMAP in between, the chances of it happening are significantly lower.

Some problems though,

- Mutt (my primary MUA), is now listing folders with the dot prefixed against the folder name. Over IMAP, the dot is ignored so the display name looks fine. I think I should make mutt go over IMAP too. Hmmm…

- My .procmailrc and .mutt/mailboxes need serious updating as a result of this move. It has grown wild over the years. Need prune and fix it later.

Otherwise, Thunderbird over IMAP is really nice.

Blogs for the geeks in us!

I have this other blog which I soo seldom update cause I don't want to fill it up with stuff like I hacked this today… check out this cool gadget… god I broke my box (again) kinda stuff. The idea of mixing geek talk with otherwise social musings (whenever that happens) on my primary journal did not seem that appealing.

So here it is – http://www.livejournal.com/~purple_dude/. The place where the g33k speak will happen.
